Ultra-long mega trucks on EU roads
Germany’s transport minister wants to increase the number of permitted routes in the EU.
What are the pros and cons of mega trucks?
Route after route in the EU is being opened up to mega trucks over 25 metres long. Both the EU Commission and the German Transport Minister, Volker Wissing, are pushing for an extension. It was only at the end of 2023 that the FDP politician signed an agreement with his Danish counterpart, Thomas Danielsen, on the cross-border use of so-called gigaliners.
Countries such as Austria, Slovenia and Poland still oppose EU-wide approval, but pressure is mounting. In February, the EU Parliament’s transport committee approved the cross-border networking of routes approved for gigaliners.
The regulation is expected to be approved by a majority of transport ministers in June.
